As a mother and a teacher, I know first hand the importance of protecting our community and

future generations. We are facing a global climate crisis, and our elected officials have failed to

act. That’s exactly why I’m running to be your Texas State Representative, to fight this climate

crisis head on.

I WAS BORN FOR THIS FIGHT!

I have been an educator for 30 years, 11 of those years as a bilingual 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-grade teacher. I know the academic and emotional cost of standardized testing and the fear children feel during lockdowns. That experience showed me first hand the integrity and character of our immigrant families. I would save the hundreds of millions we pay to ETS for test creation, administration, and scoring, and use it to improve our schools. I would make our schools safer from gun violence, and I would welcome the immigrants that continue to make our state a wonderful place to live.

That's not why I decided to run. I decided to run because I want my child to live in a world that has not been ravaged by climate change. For the past seven years I have been a volunteer advocate for sensible climate policy. In 2011, I got involved because I realized the situation was urgent and our government was not taking appropriate action. The situation is now more urgent. I decided to go write the needed legislation myself instead of trying to convince someone else.

My son wanted me to watch Interstellar with him a few nights ago, and said, "Mom there will be something in here that will help your campaign." He was right. At the moment when Cooper needs to dock his spaceship to the space station which has suffered an explosion and is spinning wildly, the autopilot says that docking is impossible. Cooper says, "No, it's necessary." And that's exactly what I'm saying about climate action.

WHAT KIND OF ACTION?

A state-level carbon fee and dividend similar to HR 763 in the US House to reduce greenhouse gas emissions so we can stay under the 1.5 degrees of warming that scientists say is necessary to protect ourselves and our children.

Working with the City of Houston to support their Climate Action Plan, including more money to deal with the floods made worse by our warming atmosphere. Harvey had 38% more rain than a world that hadn't warmed 1 degree Celcius would have.

Granting the land use for higher speed transmission lines to bring the West Texas Wind Power to Houston.

Incentivizing solar and other sources of renewable energy.

I have been heartened by the response I have gotten from voters, including many people working in the oil and gas industry. Engineers and scientists know that action needs to be taken. I have learned from scientists and economists the best path to take to protect ourselves. I will work every day to do achieve those changes, not because they are easy but necessary.
